As you may well know, our food tends to have a bit of a kick. And with every flaming bite, you might just want a sip of something cool and perhaps a little sweet. That’s where our aguas frescas come in. These freshly-made, sweet beverages are the perfect accompaniment to any meal, spicy or not.
Aguas Frescas:
Aguas frescas is Spanish for “cool waters” or more literally, “fresh waters.” This accurate title depicts the refreshment of these beverages as they are delightfully sweet and the ultimate thirst quencher. They are made with water, sugar, and one or more kinds of fruit, cereals, flowers or seeds. Aguas Frescas are primarily enjoyed in many different forms all across Central America, Mexico, and in the US.
Popular Flavors:
Some of the most popular flavors include tamarind, hibiscus, and the most common, horchata. Horchata is also referred to as horchata de arroz because it is made with rice (arroz) mixed with vanilla and cinnamon to create a uniquely delicious and creamy drink. And though it tastes like dessert, it is actually quite nutritious! There is no dairy, and when made with fresh ingredients, it does not require much sugar.
No-Guilt Treat:
One of the best parts of aguas frescas is that you can feel good about indulging in this treat. That’s because it is far better than juice which removes all of the fruit’s fiber from the finished product. Rather, aguas frescas is made by blending whole fruits with water. The completed drink is left unfiltered or strained, keeping its glycemic index levels low and fiber content high!
